Fellows Unite: SimLEARN Fellowship Graduates Support Each Other’s Work at IMSH 2022

Under the mentorship of their Fellowship Program Director, Dr. Rich Fidler, PhD, CRNA, CHSE, San Francisco Interprofessional Advanced Clinical Simulation Fellowship graduates continue to collaborate to spread simulation across professions and country lines. Three graduates – Dr. Yahya Acar, Dr. Jose Generoso, and Dr. Mary Sturgeon – presented at the 2022 International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH), which was held in Los Angeles, California. IMSH is an international conference that explores the latest innovations and best practices in healthcare simulation. Read below how the former SimLEARN fellows are contributing to the field of simulation.

Dr. Acar is an emergency medicine physician. He is currently a simulation fellow at the University of Florida Health System’s Center for Safety, Simulation & Advanced Learning Technologies (CSSALT) located in Gainesville, Florida. He is an associate professor of emergency medicine at The Gulhane School of Medicine in Turkey. He is the President of the EMAT Aeromedical Evacuation Study Group and co-founder of Medical Simulation Study Group.

IMSH Poster Presentations:

  • Does Pinching the Oxygen Tubing of a Non-Rebreather Facemask During Exhalation Conserve Oxygen While Maintaining SpO2 During Critical Care Oxygen Shortage in a Low Resource Environment: A Simulator Pilot Study

  • A Methodical, Pitch-Neutral Technique for Side-Fire, Systematic Prostate Biopsy

IMSH Oral Presentations

  • Attitude is Everything: Keep Probe Pitch Neutral During Side-Fire Prostate Biopsy: A Simulator Study

SimVentors: Technology Experiential Area

  • Development of the mixed-reality, semi-autonomous resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) simulator allowing real-time tracking of ultrasound-guided femoral arterial access and REBOA catheter insertion steps. Virtual coach (VC) was integrated to teach and assess learners autonomously. Conducted a mastery-based validation study comparing the virtual coach against human instructor (HI). (Hands-on workshops were offered during 6 SimVentors sessions)
